After an 8-year hiatus, this dog immediately recognized his dad in an emotional reunion
This story is proof that you should never give up hope. Even when things seem bleak, there may be a light at the end of the tunnel.
In 2012, Stevie Rodger’s two dogs, Kavik and Konan, exited his home in Scotland to relieve themselves but mistakenly slipped out of the gate. After scouring the vicinity, he found them on a farmer’s sheep field.
The farmer pitilessly shot both dogs, immediately killing Konan. Kavik was wounded but fled.
The family searched tirelessly for months, posting signs and offering a reward throughout the area where he was last seen. They even made a post on Dog Lost, listing his last known location and two phone numbers to call with any information that may have led to his discovery.
“If you see Kavik, please call either of these numbers immediately with the location you have seen him in. He may be scared and will need veterinary attention.”
They expressed their grief for the loss of both dogs and didn’t think they’d ever see Kavik again.
Eight years after their dog went missing, they received a call about a possible sighting. The dog was in Birmingham- 300 miles away from home.
The staff discovered an emaciated German shepherd mix that seemed to match the description of Kavik on Dog Lost, so they contacted Stevie.
He was in disbelief at first, but the next day drove four hours to see his dog again. When he arrived and saw how skinny his pup had become, he knew it was Kavik. The now 10-year-old dog immediately remembered his dad and started crying tears of joy.
“He ran over to me and started licking me,” Stevie told the Metro, “It was as if he’d seen me just yesterday. It was very emotional.” She went on to say that it’s hard to believe it’s been more than eight years since he’s been gone, but he seems to have settled back in just fine.
Kavik and the family’s first night together was spent on the couch. The following day, Kavik went to visit the vet for some routine blood work and check-ups. In addition to being dehydrated and underweight, it was discovered that there was a growth on his back that would need to be removed surgically. His road to recovery may be lengthy, but according to the family, they are more than happy to take care of him during this difficult time.
Stevie is astonished at the reunion and calls it a “Christmas miracle”. The entire family, who are overjoyed to have their dear dog back, now plan to help out others in need as well.
