Grandad Believes Their Aging Dog is “No Longer Interesting” and Takes Her to be Euthanized

Each day, animals are abandoned at shelters for various reasons. While the excuses differ, many animals are left feeling confused and scared of strangers.

For example, one owner took his dog to the vet and asked that she be put down because he no longer wanted her.

The grandfather had to get rid of his old dog, and he did it in front of his granddaughter. She just responded with a casual “We don’t really like her. We prefer our other dogs.”

Thankfully, the vet didn’t want to comply with the man’s requests and instead contacted an animal hero for help.

As stated on the Old Dog Home website, Melissa runs the center out of her 11-acre property in Conyers, Georgia. There, she rescues dogs over the age of 7 from Atlanta-area animal shelters. Once brought back to health emotionally and physically, as well as given any needed medical care, she then finds them their “forever families”.

The veterinary center called her about the dog in need, and she went to help despite being at full capacity.

“We received an elderly dog whose previous owner no longer wanted to take care of her. Even though she was sweet and it seemed like she was in decent health, the staff couldn’t bear to euthanize her. Please consider taking her in!” Melissa wrote on Facebook.

Even though she was stuffed, about to jet off and two of her dogs needed extensive surgeries, Melissa couldn’t dissuade herself from helping this poor creature.

When she went to meet this dog, her heart broke at how much help the pup needed.

The grandfather said that the dog, later called Holly and aged between 10 and 12, was having accidents and “we just don’t want her anymore.

“ Filthy would be an understatement for this dog. Oily bald patches cover her scalp, and crusty yellow discharge glues her eyelashes together. And she reeks,” began Melissa’s assessment of the animal. “The vet said she has a yeast infection which is probably causing accidents in the house.”

Melissa said, “I don’t like to be harsh, but the granddaughter looked at me and shrugged – ‘We just don’t really like her. We prefer our other dogs.’ Meanwhile, the dog stood there smiling and wagging her tail.”

Upon seeing Holly in need, Melissa took her in and began to help improve both her physical and mental health. She did this by wrapping her in blankets and snuggling with her. Also, during the time that Melissa had custody of Holly, there were no accidents reported.

“She was shaking uncontrollably, scared and confused. She didn’t want to get off the bed; she felt like an unwanted gift that gets passed around. I enveloped her in blankets and held her close until she started to relax and eventually fall asleep. I whispered promises to her that she will always be loved and wanted from now on. We named her Holly. Merry Christmas, baby girl.” This is what Melissa wrote about finding Holly abandoned on Christmas day.

Once Holly has healed both physically and mentally, Melissa will help her find a forever home full of love and attention.

Please share to pay tribute to this animal hero who makes life so much better for our four-legged friends.
